Aosta.
The province of Valle d'Aosta is considered the most popular, for lovers of winter outdoor activities on alpine skiing, not only in Italy. And here come urban residents from all over Europe and not only.
The capital of this mountainous region is the ancient city of Aosta. It can be reached by public, private or rented transport. In the first case, the variants with the train and bus prevail, which depart this direction from Milan and Turin.
What to visit?
The city of Aosta is interesting not only for its resort component. There really is something to see. And all because the capital of the region was founded by the Romans in 25 BC. This very time is the oldest relic of the city - an arch in honor of Emperor Augustus.
And although it has undergone a number of changes in the course of its history, the main part of it has survived to the present day in its original form.
The Praetorian gates, through which the entrance to Aosta from Rome took place, also look good these days. They also served as a gateway to Gaul, since the valley was the most direct route to this Roman province.
Also the first century is the fortress walls and the ancient Roman theater, in which present day performances are held. It is located on Via Baillage and is known for its well-preserved façade, 22 meters high.
Still from that era in the city remained the Roman bridge Pont de Pierre. Its name translates as a stone bridge. It is an arched structure, with a length of 17 meters and a height of 6 meters.
It was erected in a place where the Booth River was narrowed due to two rocks on opposite banks. But over time, the river changed its course and now there are only dry stones under the bridge.
The last attraction of Aosta, the Roman period, is Criptoportico. This underground structure still causes controversy among scientists, at the expense of its purpose. The base of Criptoportico is equated to the time of erection of Aosta herself.
The structure is an underground gallery in the form of a horseshoe, which was originally, most likely, used for religious purposes. But exactly about it you can say that in the Middle Ages here there were warehouses. Today this place is very impressive in its scope.
The Middle Ages in Aosta are represented mainly by their center. It is here that houses and streets are located, which are more than one century old. But as always in the architectural plan are allocated its religious constructions. So the cathedral, located in the piazza Giovanni XXIII, dates back to the 12th century and was built in the Gothic style.
And on the square Piazza Ronkas, it will be interesting to visit the archaeological museum. Also interesting are the neighborhoods of Aosta, in which there are several well-preserved castles. There are also nearby the thermal baths in Saint-Didier and the mineral springs of Cormaggiore and San Vincenzo.
Skiing.
Among other things, Aosta is the most budgeted option for winter recreation in this place. The truth in this case, you have to spend money on the road to the ski slopes themselves.
But even in this case the benefit will be obvious, because as in the season, the difference in prices in the hotels of Aosta and at the resorts differs approximately twice, not in favor of the latter. The truth and comfort in the city is less, because the resorts are mostly the most modern hotels.
In the valley there is a general ski pass. Thanks to this feature, you can access the ski slopes 720 kilometers long and lifts number 180. But still the main ski resort of Aosta is Pila.
This is probably the most modern resort in the province of Valle d'Aosta. It is here that the Italian national team in mountain skiing is training. So the resort is very serious, with complex routes. In any case, 70 percent of them are "red."
However, and beginners alpine skiers, there is a place where to ride. In Pyla 70 kilometers of ski slopes with a height difference of 952 m. 12 lifts help ski lovers to climb to the starting point.
In addition, in Pyla there is a snowpark with a zone with half-pipe and snowboard routes. Around the resort is equipped with 29 kilometers of tracks for cross-country skiers. In the summer, Pila is a great place for hiking. And most importantly, Aosta and Pila are connected by a gondola lift.
