Trieste. The Venetian Riviera.
The northernmost seaside resorts in Italy are the representatives of the Venetian Riviera. And the northernmost of them is Trieste. But this is the same case when rest on the northern shore of the Adriatic Sea, much nicer than the one on the southern shore of the North Sea.
In addition, the special charm of rest in these places, gives the incomparable Venice, where you can get here not only on good Italian roads, but also by the sea.
And although Venice is undoubtedly a magnificent city, this page will tell about the city of Trieste, which is located at the very border with Slovenia. By the way, this situation not only does not infringe rest on it, but opens new horizons and opportunities for the qualitative study of this ancient land.
In particular, in the immediate vicinity of the resort, in the region of Notranjska, in Slovenia, is the largest in Europe system of karst caves. The biggest and most famous of them are Shkotzyan caves.
A bit of history.
The city of Trieste, in spite of its two thousandth existence, remained a quiet and quiet town of Austrian Primorye until the 17th century. But the situation changed dramatically when the Austrian emperor gave the city a free status.
As a result, by the end of the 19th century, Trieste grew 27 times and became one of the main ports of the Mediterranean. And it was during this period that he began to enjoy increased demand from the Austrian nobility, which provided him the name of the Austrian Riviera.
By the results of the First World War the city moved to Italy. But once belonged to the Austrian crown, reminded so far of its embankments, a large canal and other attractions, without which it is impossible to imagine the city today.
The main of them, without a doubt, is the Unity Area. In addition to being considered one of the largest in the world, seven palaces surround it on three sides. And one more side is a sea view.
What to see.
In the center of the square is a statue of Emperor Charles VI. It was he who gave the city free in 1719, which was a turning point, in the history of the development of Trieste. Here is the Fountain of the Four Continents.
To understand the exposition you need to know that the moor with a lion means Africa, the woman in a toga with a horse is Europe, an Indian with a caiman (crocodile) is America, and accordingly, an Asian with a camel is Asia.
And the woman with wings mounted above the pedestal means Trieste himself, who accepts ships from all over the world, ignoring skin color, religion and other prejudices.
The most beautiful palace, facing its facade to the square, is the Palazzo del Municipio (Municipal Palace). It was built by the architect Giuseppe Bruni in 1875. And in 1938 the dictator Mussolini broadcast from his balcony about the introduction of racial discrimination in Italy. But the palace where it stood and stands, and the duce (leader) is hanged.
But the oldest of the palaces of the square is the Palazzo Pitteri (Pittery Palace). It was built by the architect Alderiko Moro in 1780. Next to it stands the palace hotel Grand Hotel Duchi d`Asta, which appeared here in 1873. And here there is Palazzo della Giunta Regionale, Palazzo del Governo, Palazzo Stratti, Palazzo Modello.
Behind the Palazzo Stratti Palace, another famous landmark of Trieste, the Giuseppe Verdi Theater, hides from the curious eyes. This is an opera house that was built in the early 19th century with the money of Giovanni Matteo Tommasini.
This private person has put before the city government only one condition - to have several boxes for own use. This is how it was necessary to love music, to build a city theater for its own money and give it to the city, with the condition to watch and listen to all of his performances. Very nicely furnished in Trieste is also the Grand Canal, suitable to the very center of the city.
In addition to those listed above, there are other places of interest that are not a sin to take a look at. In particular, there are remnants of ancient Roman buildings, the Basilica of San Giusta with the tomb of the Karlist contenders for the Spanish throne. There is also the castle of San Giusto, which was the last version of the once-existing Venetian fortress on this site.
There is also Miramare Castle and the only beach in Europe, divided by a wall into the male and female half. This beach is still very popular, with quarrelsome spouses or lovers.
The beaches of Trieste are mostly pebbly and stony. Since the time of the Austrian empire, there have been many embankments equipped with a descent into the sea. In many places, to enter the sea, special slippers are required to avoid injuring your legs.
Most of the city's beaches are paid, although there are several wild ones. But still in the country the choice of beaches is much better and richer. This applies to their equipment and beach entertainment.
